Best Place To Stay In Prague

Prague is an amazing place to visit, but its diverse architecture and abundance of neighborhoods make it hard to choose where to stay, especially for your first visit. In this article, we are going to explain different neighborhoods and give you hotel recommendations.

Prague City Centre

Obviously, the best option is to stay in the main center of Prague, but the historical hub of the Czech capital consists of several neighborhoods: Old Town and the Jewish Quarter, Lesser Town, Castle District, and New Town.

Old Town and the Jewish Quarter

This is what most locals think of when you ask them about staying in the historical center. Old Town attracts tourists with its iconic sights: the Astronomical Clock, Old Town Hall, Tyn Church, and many more. Therefore, if you want to be in the hub of activities, you should stay in the Old Town. On the downside, staying there is pretty expensive, as hotels and restaurants have higher prices in this area. Another issue you might have with staying in the Old Town is the noise and the overall busyness of the area; the stream of tourists here is never-ending! At night, Old Town doesn’t sleep, as most clubs and bars stay open until the early morning.

Pro tip: If you are worried that the buzz of the Old Town won’t let you sleep, make sure your hotel is located away from the busy streets, such as Karlova, Dlouha, Celetna, Melantrichova, Parizska, Kaprova, or squares, such as Old Town Square or Little Square. If you’ve already booked your lodging there, don’t worry, just ask to be accommodated in a room overlooking a courtyard.

Lesser Town

Lesser Town is located on the opposite side of the river from the Old Town, right below Prague Castle. Historically, Lesser Town had always accommodated travelers who were awaiting their audience with the king, so this area has a long tradition in the hospitality field. Additionally, Lesser Town has some of the most luxurious hotels in the city that overlook its beautiful gardens and churches. It is a quiet area where many embassies, and even the Czech parliament and senate, are located, so you won’t experience crazy nightlife here. The only disadvantage of Lesser Town is the fact that about half of this neighborhood is on a slope, which can complicate getting to the hotel.

Pro tip: If you want to stay in Lesser Town without climbing hills and stairs every time you go to your hotel, make sure your accommodation is located near the river or the tram line.

What is the difference between Old Town and the Lesser Town?

For many visitors, these two historical areas look very similar: beautiful “gingerbread” houses, narrow streets, and stunning architecture. There are a couple of differences, however. Firstly, Old Town is the hub of life, both day and night, while Lesser Town is quieter thanks to its lack of clubs. Secondly, Old Town is located on a plain and has fewer green areas, while Lesser Town is on a slope and has lots of gardens and parks.

Castle District

As you’ve probably guessed by the name, Castle District is located right next to Prague Castle, which is one of the tallest points in Prague. If you choose to stay in the Castle District, prepare to take tram 22 to your hotel or walk uphill to get to your accommodation. This neighborhood is the smallest one on the list, so you won’t find as many hotels or apartments there. Nevertheless, it is a very picturesque place that is completely quiet at night.

Pro tip: Make sure your hotel serves breakfast, as the area doesn’t have many cafes that open early in the morning.

Hotels in the Prague Castle District (100€-180€):

Questenberk Hotel - Questenberk Hotel in Prague, nestled near Prague Castle, offers a serene blend of history and luxury. Experience elegant accommodations in the heart of Hradèany, making it an ideal base for exploring the city's rich heritage. Click here to see availability and prices!

New Town

A striking contrast to the previous neighborhood, the New Town is a vast area that stretches from the Powder Tower to Vysehrad, hugging the Old Town. New Town was founded in the 14th century and was comprised of several villages, which explains its huge size. Therefore, you need to be ready to use public transport (metro and trams) if you stay in this neighborhood. On a positive note, New Town has lower prices for lodging and dining compared to the above-mentioned neighborhoods if you avoid busy squares. Overall, it is hard to generalize when talking about accommodation in that part of Prague because New Town has livelier and quieter areas. For instance, Wenceslas Square and Namesti Republiky are very busy, while Petrska Ctvrt and Vojtesska Ctvrt are less noisy.

Pro Tip: Make sure your accommodation is not located on the main roads such as Zitna, Resslova, or Jecna.

Should you stay in the Old Town or the New Town of Prague?

Old Town is great for someone who wants to be surrounded by medieval architecture and be close to the main historical sights such as the Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock. On the downside, the prices in this part of the city are higher and the crowds are bigger. New Town is the neighborhood that will offer an insight into the life of locals, and provide a break from the crowds of tourists, but you will be further away from the historical center.

Prague Neighborhoods, should you stay there?

Most neighborhoods in Prague are located too far from the city center, so we do not recommend staying there unless you are willing to spend 20-30 minutes commuting to see historical sights. However, there are lovely areas right next to the city center where you can accommodate comfortably. A huge plus of staying in the neighborhood outside of the city center is the low prices for accommodations, making it a great choice if you are on a tight budget.

Vinohrady

Vinohrady is one of the best areas in Prague to live in, so we definitely recommend it for your vacation stay! This neighborhood has lots of parks and gardens, as well as hip cafes and popular restaurants. Vinohrady has a relaxed atmosphere, which is why it's perhaps loved by expats.

Places to stay in Vinohrady (50€- 100€):

Where to stay in Smichov (50€- 100€):
